For three hours she’d been on the stand, stretched to the limit, yet holding together, near hysteria but getting the job done. For the entire three hours, Ashley and Stacey never made eye contact.

There is perhaps a chance that Ashley snuck a quick peek in her mother’s direction, but Stacey never looked back. Stacey sat at her desk impassively, eyes downward, never looking up, occasionally resting her head on her hand.

As Ashley testified, her maternal grandmother sat in the back row of the spectator section, teeth clenched, not believing a word the girl uttered.

Ashley would have the world believe she was some sort of robot, who followed commands without thinking, when in reality—and you only had to know Ashley for a short time to figure this out—Ashley was an extremely contrary person.

“I don’t believe that Stacey ever put anything in a drink,” Ashley’s grandmother would later say. “If you are twenty years old and the drink tastes bad, it doesn’t make any difference if your mother tells you to drink it. You are not going to drink it. Not if it really tasted that bad.”

Anticipating a lengthy cross-examination, the judge recessed court for the lunch break. After eating, everyone returned to the courtroom, and Ashley was cross-examined by Keller.
